B’re’shiyt Teaching....by Bradley Scott - End of B’re’shiyt 1:5.
Torah Parashah - Pinchas ~ B’midbar 25:10 - 30:1
***
B’re’shiyt....
We are on
B’re’shiyt 1:5
“Vay-yiq’ra’ Elohiym la’or yom, val’choshek qara’ lay’lah. Vay’hiy-‘erev vay’hiy-boqer yom ‘echad.”
“And called God the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the day one.”
~
Last week we talked about the word LAY’LAH
which means “darkness” or “night”.
We typically associate darkness with evil
and this is true....
BUT...
M’lakhim Alef - I Kings 8:12 cjb p 377
“Shlomo said, “YHWH said he would live in thick darkness.”
AND for a long time i didn’t know what that meant.... but Praise YHWH he is willing to live in thick darkness...b/c He has to go into the dark to meet us there - to bring us into the ohr /light!!
*
Now we come to the end of B’re’shiyt 1:5
“Vay’hiy-‘erev vay’hiy-boqer yom ‘echad.”
“And the evening and the morning were the day one.”
Vay’hiy- (again, as we had this before) means “was” or “became”
“and became…. the evening - erev.”
evening always comes first.
EREV
- ayin - resh - bet
- root = ‘arav = to mix or mingle, evening, darkened, mingle, meddle, mix, “swarms of flies”
literal meaning of ‘arav = to mix or mingle… the going down of the sun… not quite light and not quite dark…. and this is what YHWH hates more than anything else - it is not pure darkness or pure light
darkness is a mixture of all colors…
Yahshua said he hates luke warm… he’d rather you be one way or the other…
darkness is obvious wrong… satanism etc… but that is not what deceives man… it isn’t the pitch black darkness that deceives man - that is clear what that is….
but it is the area in between that is deceiving…
part of one and part of another.
Yah hates a mix … he hates for us to take something that is pagan, wrong, unrighteous and unholy and put God’s name on it.
such as the observance of christmas and easter etc that have their roots clearly in pagan rituals
We have taken pagan rituals and just put God’s name on it….. and then have the audacity to say we are worshiping YHWH by doing these pagan things!!
we put Mashiach in the place of Tamuz
and Mashiach in the place of a tree
this is the very thing that YHWH hates
and that is expressed in the evening and then in the morning!
and it is no coincidence that the word evening means “to mix and mingle”’
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Y’shaYahu 24:11 - “darkened” and in CJB = “faded”
Daniyy’el 2:41-43 cjb p 1100 - root - arav =“mix, mingle”
Sh’mot 8:17 (21) cjb p 68 “swarms” i(n king james they have swarms of flies… of flies is supplied by kj translators)… but it means to mix - a mixture of pests
Sh’mot 12:38 cjb p 73 “mixed crowd” a mixed people speaking mixed languages
(We talked about this word being charav …. this comes from the Hebrew word charab - which if you switch the beit and the resh = to reverse the head of the house… you get arab!!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mishlei /Proverbs 7:1-9 cjb p 949
= contrast between day and night…
- “unknown woman” = comes at night
- don’t think for themselves and devoid of all sense
- (other translation says “void of understanding”) - this is of the darkness!
- vs 9 dusk turns into evening and finally night, dark and black… then a woman = this woman represents spiritual fornication and adultery and all things talked about in Hitgalut /Rev 2:18 with respect to the church of thyatira (cjb p 1535) those who have gone to bed with this harlot are those without Torah… they don’t know the instructions of YHWH and because they don’t have the instructions - they don’t have the light of YHWH and so they are deceived by the strange woman Jezebel…in the same way Naboth was deceived by Jezebel and getting his vineyard stolen from him all to get everything over to King Ahab.
also:
Y’shaYahu 17:14; Y’chezq’el 33:22; Chavakuk 1:8
Mattityahu 26:20:21, Mark 1:32,4:35
- betrayal - remember, true betrayal and deception comes from within ones own ranks
~~~
vay’hiy = and there was
boqer
= morning
root = baqar (just a change in the vowels)
What is interesting about this is that bazar means to put a difference between or to distinguish.
Translated in scriptures as : “morning”, “search” and even “oxen”.
Vayiq’ra 27:33 cjb p 144 “inquire” (kj = “search”) - meaning to put a difference…. about determining what is good and bad
How is that associated with morning?
b/c morning is when the light springs forth and you can see the difference - At night time when it is pitch black and you can’t tell the difference …. of animals or of people etc….
Y’chez’q’el /Ezekiel 34:12 cjb 687 “look after my sheep”
B’re’shiyt 12:16 cjb p “oxen” in cjb p “cattle” (clean animals)
Oxen is a clean animal - there is a distinction between the clean and the unclean animals…
and Yah uses day / morning with respect to good and righteous… all these are associated with when the light rises… it also includes the clean animals… not the unclean or the darkness - the erev.
Miz’mor /Psalm 5:3-4; 30:5; 143; 8 the word is “to hear” -is associated with “to hear his voice” = the period of time when Yah says you will hear his voice…
Miz’mor 5: 4-5 (3-4) cjb p 793 “hear my voice”
Mizmor 30:6 (5) cjb p 816 “with the dawn comes cries of joy” - bc that is when you can put a difference or distinguish!
50:36
Miz’mor 143:8 cjb p 935
why ? - in the morning the light lights the path and you can see where to walk.
Keep in mind that as we go on from this point, that the evenings and the mornings will be the measuring stick for all Biblical days, for new moons, for sabbaths, for festivals and harvests - will all be based upon the concept of evening and mornings…
This also sets the pattern for when YHWH’s celebrations/ feasts will be!
~~~
The last words in this verse -
51:30
YOM ECHAD
YOM = day
ECHAD = one
Some translate it as “first day”…
But the word “first” is an ordinal number expressed by the Hebrew word “reshone” which is related to b’re’shiyt -
reshone = the head or the beginning, implying and ordinal number like first, second, third….
but that is not the word used here.
ECHAD
Root = ‘ACHAD
‘Achad’s literal meaning shows up one time in scripture
Y’chez’q’l /Ezek 21:21 (16) cjb p 664 meaning go one way or the other
The literal meaning of ‘ACHAD = one way.
The eptimological picture is the picture of the house with walls and that is in the strength of the house and there is only one door - hence one way.
Achad = how many (as opposed to rashon which tells you an order of something
ECHAD means how many, but what ECHAD doesn’t tell you is the nature of the one… b/c that can be revealed in many ways… the male and female becoming one… the nature of YHWH being one… meaning there is no other creator, no other creator of the universe - no other YHWH…. just ONE…
so the picture is of the house with only one way in… but doesn’t tell you the nature of the house.
but from the Hebrew - even tho they know there is ONE God….
ECHAD.. ONE…....but the Hebrew people also know that in the way it is used, particularly in the Sh’ma and other places, ---that it implies, b/c of the word Elohiym and other uses of the word in the plural… a unity more than a singleness and perhaps in many cases.. when the concept or the idea of singleness is implied -
it is the Hebrew word Yakied
is used, rather than Echad - and many christians try to explain oneness referring to trinity but tat is a wrong use of echad… echad means more than tirinity and many places it means singleness…
....but the root implies a union of things…
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why when a man and woman are married they become ONE….
B’re’shiyt 2:24 ; 1:9 - gathering together and putting them in one or in union….
B’re’shiyt 2:24 man and woman
B’re’shiyt 2:21 = one rib
two sets of curtains in tabernacle were to form one tabernacle
the menorah - seven branches formed into one menorah in singular
B’midbar 15:16, 29
Sh’mot 12:49
we see that when a stranger or a GER (goyim / gentle) - there is ONE law for the home born and the stranger - not two laws… and that one law refers to all the 613 commandments of Yah….
But they are understood in the term of one law… not that you pick one… but they are all together one…and not different for hebrew or gentile…b/c there is only one seed from which that law comes forth from… one seed, one law, one baptism… ONE SEED…. for all.
Gal 3:28
evening and morning are collectively one day.
the two become one, b/c God can only flow when there is oneness.
Vay’q’ra 24:22 cbj p 138 Jew and Gentile being one
B’re’shiyt 2:24
Y’chez’q’el 37 the 2 sticks become one…
Yochanan 17 we have Yahshua praying for a oneness in the true Lord’s prayer…
I Corin 6:17 one spirit
I Corin 12 - diff purposes and one body
Eph 4:4-6 one body
Sh’mot 24:3 one voice
I corn 6:17 one Spirit
Sh’mot 26:1-6 one tabernacle
Shof’tiym /Judges20:1,8 Isra’el as one man

Torah Parashah Pinchas:
B’midbar / Numbers 25:10 - 30:1 Pinchas....
CJB p 181
This parashah is first about Pinchas
and then it is about YHWH telling Moshe and El’azar to take a census of the entire assembly of the people of Isra’el 20 years old and over.
Then in chapter 27 we can read about the daughters of Tz’lof’chad.
Sons got inheritance ... but these 5 girls didn’t have a brother and their father had died...
They went to Moshe and asked for land that was their fathers... and Moshe goes to YHWH in vs 5 and following and YHWH tells him... in vs 8 “If a man dies and does not have a son, you are to have his inheritance pass to his daughter.....”
and then in
B’midbar 27:12-23 cjb p 183
Then in B’midbar 28-29 is the teaching on the High Shabbats - the Moed - the Feasts of YHWH... the celebrations...
Let’s go back and read...
Read B’midbar 25:1-15 cjb p 181
I want to talk about this section of the Parashah ....
What is going on in this time period?
Remember what Bil’am told Balak in the Parashah from last Shabbat?
In Janet’s paraphrase - Bil’am basically says...
“I can’t curse Isra’el because they are blessed...
BUT if you have your women seduce Isra’el... they will accept paganism among them and then they will no longer be blessed... and you won’t even need me to curse them.... They will have cursed themselves.”
And so it came to be...
Isra’el is being seduced by Mo’av.
Who does Mo’av come to be? - part of Islam.
So Isra’el has accepted paganism and YHWH is very angry and He says the leaders must be put to death...
and Pinchas acts - killing Zimri and Kozbi in one single act.
and as a result...
YHWH’s anger is done
and the plague that already killed 24,000 people is over...
and Pinchas is given a covenant of Shalom... with him and his descendants after him... that the office of cohen will be theirs forever....
why?
vs 13 “This is because he was zealous on behalf of YHWH and made atonement for the people of Isra’el.”
This is what is known as a “light or heavy” situation.
Meaning one must way the decisions and do the heavy one... the harder one... the one that is more right....
So in that moment Pinchas must have thought that it is better to kill 2 than to have the plague continue in Isra’el.
Remember 24,000 had died!!
Nobody commanded Pinchas to do this... he did it on his own.
~
Pinchas’ act was violent and he gets a covenant of peace ... wow!
YHWH seems to be very happy with what Pinchas did.
~~~
Let’s look at another ZEALET in Torah...
Eliyahu / Elijah the prophet....
Sages teach that Eliyahu and Pinchas are actually the same person....
they mean either Pinchas never died or just that they share the same kind of spirit.... I don’t know....
But these two guys are the great zealots in the whole Torah!
Eliyahu acts with ZEAL on behalf of YHWH.....
In many ways they have very much in common....
In Eliyahu’s day - there is mass idolatry going on... just like in Pinchas’ day.
So Eliyahu proclaims a drought... on his own... YHWH did not order it... but Eliyahu did....
Eliyahu doesn’t understand b/c in
D’varim 28:23-24 cjb p 228
Yah tells Isra’el that if they go into idolatry - there won’t be rain in the land but there is plenty of rain....
So Eliyahu commands it to stop.
He stands up for the honor of YHWH and says there won’t be any more rain... and then there is no more rain...
Eliyahu is zealous.
But Pinchas seems to only get approval - it might not be the case with Eliyahu...
It is true that Eliyahu declared no more rain and YHWH honored that...but ultimately YHWH puts an end to the drought
and after the rain comes... right after the big showdown where Eliyahu called fire down from the shamayim .... Eliyahu goes on a journey to Mt Horev (otherwise known as Sinai)
A journey where Eliyahu doesn’t eat or drink for 40 days and 40 nights.
Someone else did that on the same mountain....
It seems like Eliyahu is mimicking Moshe’s experience...
And in this...
M’lakhim alef / 1 King 19:9-10 cjb p 394
YHWH comes to Eliyahu there on Mt Horev /Sinai...
and asks Eliyahu - why are you here?
and Eliyahu says...
“I’ve acted ZEALOUSLY....They’ve left behind your covenant
Read
M’lakhim Alef 19:9- 14 cjb p 394
and Eliyahu gives the same answer as the first time...
and YHWH says - it is time for you to retire... go back and anoint Elisha.... he will be the next prophet after you
~
Why was Eliyahu being retired?...
and why did he go to Horev anyway??
~
According to Rabbi David Fohrman - there is a possible answer....
and the answer comes down to two words that are spelled exactly the same way as 2 words that the Torah uses with respect to Pinchas...
M’lakhim Alef 19:10 - “qahno qinate” = kof -nun-aleph and kof -nun-aleph-tov - yod
and
B’midbar 25:11 - “qahno ET qinate” = kof- nun-aleph-vav ALEPH Tov kof-nun-aleph-tov - yod.
“qahno qinate”
“I’ve acted zealously”
qahno can be zealous or jealous depending on the context.
The same words....
Do you see the similarity between Pinchas and Eliyahu now?
BUT why are they dealt with so differently by YHWH?
These 2 phrases...
“qahno qinate” and “qahno ET qinate” may also tell us the difference between Pinchas and Eliyahu.
To understand ... let’s go back to the question YHWH asked Eliyahu at Horav - Sinai
... Sinai when zealotry was happening... as the Torah was being revealed.... also at that moment - Isra’el was down below worship at a golden calf!!
and in that moment and act took place of qahno - a human action expressing divine jealousy...
In Sh’mot 32 cjb p 97
YHWH tells Moshe - get down the mountain - “your people” are being disobedient....
and Moshe says basically -- “My people?!” - they are YOUR people! And you can’t be mad at them....
So then what happens?...
The next thing that happens is that Moshe goes down the mountain and he sees what the people are doing...
and HE -Moshe’- gets angry!
And Moshe breaks the tablets of stone that YHWH wrote on!
Did YHWH tell him to do this?
No ! He is acting unilaterally.
He’s taking what YHWH wrote on and he is breaking them in his anger!
Rabbi Fohrman says this is an example of “qahno”...
DIVINE ANGER...
So look at the other guys...
Pinchas - who killed that couple in sin
and Eliyahu - who called for no rain and then called fire down from hashamyim ...
Because it was on Sinai when YHWH gave Moshe the Torah... that YHWH first declared Himself
El Qahnay.... aleph - lamed and kof-nun-aleph
= a jealous God. (Sh’mot 20:5 cjb p 96)
A jealous God... a God who will not tolerate idolatry...
Now here on the mountain with Moshe - and the people worshiping at the golden calf...
Moshe now expresses that jealously....
That expression of jealousy becomes the president for both what Pinchas did and what Eliyahu did...
Eliyahu could have looked at what Moshe did and thought... “Yah unilaterally led - and Yah followed... he destroyed the tablets and YAH followed....Moshe defended Yah’s honor.”
but there is another way to see it.
It’s a way, we might argue, that it is suggested by Pinchas...
In the aftermath of the golden calf episode - Yah stood ready to destroy the people...
Just as Yah stood ready to destroy the leaders in the time of Pinchas....
Yah tells Moshe he is going to destroy the people...
Moshe tells Yah that he must not be angry
and then Moshe goes down the mountain and he is angry!!
It is not an act of hypocracy....it makes perfect sense...
What Moshe is telling YHWH is that “YOU can’t be angry, but i can be angry.”
Moshe knew something very very deep.
~
Example:...
Let’s just say there is a family ... and the kid did something really dumb or bad... the dad is very very angry... and instead of the mom letting the dad go in and deal with the problem kid.... the mom says...”let me take care of it, let me express OUR anger”.... to protect the kid from a reaction that is too big from Dad... and she takes care of it...
BUT she has to go in to take care of it - really upset for her.....
~
Moshe knows he is just a human ... but YHWH is the infinite God with POWER... and Moshe ‘says’ - “let me express your angry.”
There is two kinds of zealotry ...
BUT Elijah’s zealotry didn’t come in a moment where Yah had decreed destruction...
It was Eliyahu standing up for what he PERCEIVED Yah’s anger to be...
and then said “I acted zealously”....
and he was retired.
But there is another type of zealously.... that Yah will not retire and He loves abundantly...
a kind of zealoutry that ironically brings peace.
It is not when you stand up for what you think Yah’s honor is....
it is the “qahno ET qinate”
It’s the ZEAL of Pinchas ...
who learned from Moshe - what it means to feel the jealousy of YHWH.....
qahno ET qinate is when the weaker partner expresses the anger of the stronger partner b/c it is the only safe thing that can be done.
Pinchas kills and expresses divine anger and in doing so he brings peace to the nation and
gets himself in a covenant of peace...
BECAUSE He was following YHWH...
He wasn’t just doing what he THOUGHT...
**
Now think about this zealous man for a bit... He was obedient....
I want to be zealous!!
So it is key that i be obedient!!
Oh YHWH teach us how to be holy!
AMEIN!
