B're'shiyt teaching #2 - Brad Scott's work, and Torah portion Toldot

Sh’ma

2 Nov 2013  ~  29 Cheshvan 5774

Torah parashah - Toldot - History

B’resheet 25:19 - 28:9

B’resheet 26: 1-5 cjb p 26

26:5 “All this is because Avraham heeded what i said and did what i told him to do - he followed my mitzvot my regulations and my teachings.”

So How did Avraham heed what He said?... if there was no Torah?
Remember... this is before Sinai....

Who is Avraham - besides “The father of faith”?

Brad Scott says.... “he is the prototype of the SEED YHWH is seeking.

That is shy it is called “Avraham’s Seed”.

“Avraham’s seed” is an idiom for TRUST/ FAITH.

The true seed is seed received by TRUST in YHWH
and not blood and sperm.

YHWH’s seed - HIS WORDS, HIS TORAH ways produce in us HIs seed.... which is His Word, His Torah, His ways!  :)

This is what Avraham produced and it is is THIS seed in which the earth will be blessed.”

~
That word “blessed” = 1st appears in
 B’resheet 12:3 cjb p 11
“I will bless those who bless you, but i will curse anyone who curses you; and by you all the families of the earth will be blessed.

“BLESSED” = nivrecu = grafted in or intermingled.

In this parashah is also :

  1. Ya’akov’s akediah = giving up what he holds dear to follow YHWH... the story of Ya’akov and Esav (Jacob and Esau).... and that based on Hebrew - Ya’akov is not the bad guy that the English makes him out to be.

B’resheet 18:26

18 - He went to his father and said, “My father?”  and Ya’akov waited.  He replied, “here i am; who are you , my son?”

19  Ya’akov said to his father ...”I bring this to you.  Esav, however, is your first born.  I’ve done on many occasions what you asked me to do.  Get up now, sit down, eat the game and then give me your blessing.”

that word from which “game” comes from is often translated just as “food”.

20  Yitz’chak said to his son, “how did you find it so quickly, my son?  He answered “YHWH made it so.”

21 Yitz’chak said to Ya’akov, “come close”....  Yitz’chak /Isaac knew Esav wouldn’t talk about YHWH

26 “he approached and kissed him.  Yitz’chak  smelled his clothes and blessed Ya’akov....”
Rabbinic teaching says that Ya’akov had the scent of Eden /Heaven ... and Yitz’chak had smelled this before ... during Avraham’s akedia....  when Yitz’chak was going to be sacrificed... So here the scent was again... and he knew it was YHWH’s plan.

  1. B’resheet 28:1-4
28:3 “May El Shaddai bless you, make you fruitful and increase your descendants, until they become a whole assembly of peoples.

“Assembly” = Kahal = multitude; synagogue....  this is the word that in the B’rit Chadashah is translated “church”.

This is the first mention of kahal = church.
The church was not “born in Acts”... it was born in B’resheet - IN THE BEGINNING!

Brad Scott’s B’resheet teaching - part 2

Review....

Page 1 in the study guide

Brad Scott says....
“We are going to study the beginning and the foundation of the source of all that is good, righteous, and holy and all that is evil and unrighteous (and not holy).  Through the Hebrew language and culture, we will define the beginning of all scriptural doctrine by (understanding) and going back to the original design and Designer.”
Yesha’Yahu / Isaiah 46:10 cjb p 510
“At the beginning I announce the end, proclaim in advance things not yet done; and i say that my plans will hold, I will do everything i please to do.”
Christianity translates this to mean...  “God knows the end in the beginning.”
but...
“At the beginning i announce the end”....
== maggiyd mere ‘shiyth
really means....
== “Declaring out of the beginning ... the end” ...
or spoken easier == “YHWH declares the end ... in the beginning.”
Do we get this.??...  that YHWH is telling us... prophecy about what is going to happen - right from the beginning.!!

So we know that the end is found in the beginning, ... the so does hasatan... and so no wonder most of the world does not know what the beginning means!!!!
*
We talked about the Hebrew language and that being YHWH’s language and the power of His spoken Word...

Yesha’Yahu /Isaiah 55:11 cjb p 524
“... so is my word that goes out from my mouth - it will not return to me unfulfilled; but it will accomplish what i intend, and cause to succeed what i sent it to do.”
*
We talked about how YHWH in His wisdom - used the natural to teach the spiritual.... and he picked something that would always be around us... - SEED.

*
We also talked about 2 world views....

  1. Big bang = something from nothing produced by evolution

  1. Something always was...  creation = intelligent design

And how we need to decide which we believe.

Mizmore /Psalm 33:6 cjb p 820
“By the WORD of YHWH the heavens were made, and their whole host by a breath from his mouth.”

B’resheet 1:1
“B’resheet bara elohim  et (Aleph-Tav) ha shamayim va-et har Eretz.”
“In the beginning YHWH Aleph Tov created the heavens and the earth.”
In Mattityahu /Matthew 13:3-9  cjb p 1239 “The parable of the sower”
... the seed is the WORD of YHWH.

Yochanan / John 1:1-3 cjb p 1329
“In the beginning (B’resheet) was the Word (the Living Torah), and the Word (Living Torah) was with YHWH, and the Word (Living Torah) was YHWH.  He was with YHWH in the beginning.  All things came to be through Him, and without Him nothing made had being.”
*
D’varim / Deut 29:29 cjb p 239
“Things which are hidden belong to YHWH our Elohim.  But the things that have been revealed belong to us and our children forever, so that we can observe all the WORDS of this Torah.”
“Avineu /Father, has prepared everything from the beginning - BY DESIGN....
What we are about to study we will see the design / pattern with man and with the nation of Isra’el....

1   First we will read about creation ... completed
  -then the fall
-then the restoration
-and eventually we will see new heaven and new earth

or

2.  We can look at it about man...
- man created complete
- then the fall
-then the restoration
  • and then, man kind waiting for a new body

or

3 WE can look at it collectively  - about Isra’el...
  • first Isra’el is created
  • Then the kingdom divides to two and there is a fall
- The the restoration by Messiah as revealed in prophets in Tanakh
  • and then Bride is made complete and whole in the end...
  • and all is restored... :)

Do you see the pattern??

    1. Creation
    2. fall
    3. restoration
    4. something NEW

end of review....

We are still on page 1 of “Introduction to the study of b’re’shiyt by Brad Scott.

#3.  “p’shat, remez, drash, and sod of these words.”
= ways or levels of understand the Word of YHWH

p’shat = simple story; literal - branches/trunk
remez = prophetic - fruit/leaves
drash = to search - roots
sod =  hidden
**
Now look at what Brad wrote....

“All of God’s will, purpose, essence, design, eschatology and teaching is found in the first 4 chapters of this book. (B’resheet).  Abba Father prepared everything from the beginning by design.  What He is about to do with creation, He will also do with man than then with the nation of Isra’el.”

wow.

and then He lists the main things He is going to be addressing... the things that we are going to understand through this teaching - learning what every single word in B’rsheet 1=6 means!!

  1. What is the beginning, and why it is imperative to understand?
  2. Why did Elohiym create us?
  3. What is our purpose?
  4. What is the significance of the seed and “like kind”?
  5. The pattern of light and darkness, night and day.
  6. The significance of water
  7. Origin of physical and spiritual.
  8. The relevance of the sun and the moon - signs and seasons.
  9. The calling of creation as “good”.
  10. Man in Elohiym’s image, man from dust of the earth
  11. ‘Elohiym’s first command to humans
  12.   The 7th day.
  13.   The pivotal significance of the Garden of Eden
  14. The nature and function of male and female
  15. The two trees and choice
  16. The nature and function of the serpent.
  17. Deception and disobedience.
  18.   Man’s response to sin.
  19.   What are the curses?
  20. The first marriage
  21. Why couldn’t Adam stay in the Garden?

Is anybody excited!!!  ??  !!!! :)

Page 3 of the Study Guide...

B’re’shiyt Chapter 1  Sefer Ma’aseh B’re’shiyt

B’re’shity bara’ Elohiym ‘et hashamayim v’et ha’aretz.

In the beginning created Elohiym  the heaven and the earth.

Look at this...  7 words make up the very first sentence of the Torah.
7  - the number of completion.

But you might notice that only 6 get translated.

What is missed?

B’re’shity bara’ Elohiym ‘et hashamayim v’et ha’aretz.

the... “ ‘et “

Which is written “et” in transliteration b/c that  is how it SOUNDS.... but in Hebrew ... it is an aleph and a tov!!

hmm... aleph and tov....
wonder what this means....

Hitgalut / Revelation 1:8 cjb p 1533
“I am the A and the Z” says Adonai/ YHWH.”

Hitgalut / Revelation 22:12-13 cjb p 1555
“Pay attention [says Y’shua] “i am coming soon and my rewards are with me to give to each person according to what he has done.  13 “I am the A and the Z, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

Traditional English Bibles use the Greek letters - Alpha and Omega.

David Stern in Complete Jewish uses A and Z.

But if we are talking about YHWH’s language, what would it be in Hebrew?

The Aleph and the Tov!!

So let’s go to the page before the green page... in our study guides and look at what that means...

Aleph = ox = strong, power, leader, yoke, thousand

Tov = crossed sticks = mark, sign, seal, own, covenant

So....  Aleph Tov is the power and strength of the leader of the Covenant.... who is that??

Y’shua!...

Now remember :

Yochanan / John 1:1-3 cjb p 1329
“In the beginning (B’resheet) was the Word (the Living Torah), and the Word (Living Torah) was with YHWH, and the Word (Living Torah) was YHWH.  He was with YHWH in the beginning.  All things came to be through Him, and without Him nothing made had being.”
The Living Word/ Living Torah is Y’shua...  HE is YHWH...
because YHWH is ECHAD.

**

Interesting that English translates six of the words but just leaves one out!

So lets look at that first sentence on page 3 of your study guides...

We could draw a menorah on that page...
Because this is how YHWH opened His Word... with the only thing He ever told man to make that represents Himself!!!
There are three words on one side - B’re’shiyt barah Elohiym
and there are three words on the other side - hashamayim  v’et ha’aretz
---and in the middle - at the place of the servant candle...
are you seeing this??....
is the ET = Aleph Tov = Y’shua the Messiah !!!

Do you see the picture with which YHWH opens His Word? !!
And so later, in the B’rit Chadashah, when we get to
Luke 4:16-19 cjb p 1294
Y’shua reading Yesha’Yahu / Isaiah in the Temple and there he is... the Servant / the Messiah - standing on the bemah (the raised platform) ... with 3 rabbis on his right and 3 rabbis on his left...
literally showing us the Menorah - the picture/ symbol of YHWH Himself.
Baruch HaShem YHWH!!
Amazing stuff!! :)

**
And so now we come to the first word in YHWH’s Word...!!

B’re’shiyt

the Hebrew letters are - resh, aleph, shin, yod, tov
B’re’shiyt means = “in the beginning” or

= “in the head of”

really - Re’shiyt means “beginning” or “head of”

If we take off the Bet in the beginning and the yod and the tov (which gives its feminine singular meaning at the end

we have the root of b’re’shiyt which is

a resh- aleph - shin  = to cause something to enter into motion; to produce action.

In the Hebrew language....all words are made up of roots, mostly three letter consonant roots = raw word that begins all Hebrew words.

Scott says - “if Hebrew is the mother tongue - you can see as we trace our English bibles - English words back - we arrive at the root
which is the basis all words come from”

= the Hebrew 3 letter root = will always reflect the action.  hebrew is an action language...  so when go back to root - seeing the rawest form you can get....

Scott gives the example of the  Mississippi River - all kinds of stuff has gotten dumped into it...
But, he says...
many of us have been drinking out of Mississippi River as it dumps into gulf... at the end of it....and it is not clean.

But, at the source it is clean.....   hence - why it is important to take them back to their source - so we have “clean” and clarity of what YHWH really meant... not what we “think” it means to us now.

The root is always about action  a verb of the word.
The root is known as the “parent root”.

so let’s look at the root of B’resheet - which is Rosh.

ROSH is....
---translated as :

beginning, first, first fruits, chief, head, sum.

Scripture where these are found....
are listed in the middle of paige 3 of your study guide

It is also suggested that this - B’re’shiyt is a title and expression of the Messiah himself -- a  word that refers to “He that begins all things.”

*
Bet = to be inside
if we go to the aleph bet page before the green page in our study guide, we can see that bet means “house, family, in , with, peace, divide.”

*
B’resheet isn’t about time, Brad Scott says...   It is not about time....because .... time is a dimension and time has to have matter or mass in order for there to be time...

We need something to measure by - otherwise we can’t have time.

YHWH is outside of time and not subject to matter or mass .

“ YHWH can become a man in time and dwell with us.. and yet still be a spirit....
... and  b/c he is YHWH  and He is multidimensional... He can do that...  when He takes on flesh he dwells among man... He lives with us.

.....there is something to measure by... and that is... He has to have flesh to die for the people if He is going to be able to rescue us out of time as we know it.”

“The 1st 7 words constantly show us who is responsible for bringing time and matter into existence!” ~~ YHWH!!!

~not some “big bang!”

Sh’mot /Ex 12:2  cjb p 71
“you are to begin your calendar with this month; it will be the first month of the year for you.”

This is about the  beginning of months.. cause it to come into motion

(This - beginning of months is Aviv and it sets in to motion all the feasts of that year .... so that means it is first month for those who worship YHWH.)

*
We talked earlier and last Shabbat about how YHWH shows us spiritual things in the natural...

Hebrew begins in agriculture.
YHWH made it that way so we could understand what He is talking about.

As we study Hebrew words.. we will learn that ..

Hebrew words that are generally seen as positive words....as we trace them back we find they are related to similar background of meaning  --  something that is collected together / made whole/ gathered together and drawn into one - as it was designed to do.

And as we search back negative words we will find that they also share similar meaning among themselves of --  taking something and breaking it or crushing it;  destroying so not useful for designed purpose...

Did you get that?

Positive Hebrew words are related and they go back to --  something that is collected together / made whole/ gathered together and drawn into one - as it was designed to do.

and

Negative Hebrew words are related and they go back to --  taking something and breaking it or crushing it;  destroying so not useful for designed purpose.

**
The beginning word -- B’resheet -- goes back to -- gathering things making them whole.

**

Hitgalut /Rev 1:8 cjb p 1533  is about the beginning and the ending...
“I am the aleph and the tav, says YHWH, Elohiym of heaven’s armies, the One who is, who was and who is coming.”

Hitgalut /Rev 1:17-18

Hitgalut /Rev 3:14 “To the angel of the Messianic Community in Laodicea, write “here is the message from the Amein, the faithful and true witness, the Ruler of God’s creation:”

==the faithful and true witness  of the beginning....

Brad Scott says - not understanding this verse.... one can draw conclusion that Messiah is part of creation.

BUT - NO -  this is a title... He exists... there is no explanation for how YHWH came into being...

Most religions explain where there god came from.
BUT not the Bible.. .YHWH exists.
He just is and we don’t know how He got there....  We just know HE is there.
*

Rosh has  prefix  in the word B’re’shiyt
it is a bet

bet = inside , a family inside the house...

in the beginning... being inside the house...

In the oldest Tanakh’s known - and up to this day if you read B’resheet 1:1 in Hebrew...

the Bet is enlarged in the text.

and it  faces the opening of the house...

meaning ....this letter is facing all the rest of scripture all the rest of the Words...

in pictograph = the bet is a tent like structure... and we know that based on pictographs...  paleo Hebrew has gone through a shifting evolution of rotating or turning letters....

so - by the time we get to even the Dead Sea Scroll =  we get to the opening to the left...

BUT  - we really don’t know if that is how it was in the beginning....

But we know it is a consistent picture of a house or tent like structure.

So ponder this ----

----    all the Word starts with a house...

- and all the things of YHWH will be in the house, and everything not of house will be outside of house...

that is a “no brainer” but think about this...

---all the things of YHWH will be in the house, and everything not of house will be outside of house...

So Godly things are in the house and all things ungodly will be outside the house.

This is why, in the parable of sower...  Y’shua is in the house in Mattityahu 13:1  and then Y’shua went out of house and went to the West... with the purpose of bringing them back to the house.

This is a picture of the Hebrew word - Yabal = yod- bet - lamid

= “to take by the hand and lead to the house and have a family”
...

So He begins with the house...

the very first letter of the entire Torah - ...  to take by the and and lead to the house - to have a family...

Do you see HIS plan??!!! :)

*

YHWH created  it perfect... but man falls... and in order to redeem them to his house... He is bringing them back to his house

Do you remember the PATTERN we talked about earlier??

    1. Creation
    2. fall
    3. restoration
    4. something NEW

Ivrim/ Heb 3:1-6  cjb p 1495

3:2 “He was faithful to YHWH who appointed him; just as ‘Moshe was faithful in all YHWH’s house.’”
This Scripture is saying that ... ‘He who has built the house has more honor than he who is the house...”
“This refers to Messiah as one who built the house,
and Moshe as in the house.

3:4 - every house built by some man... but he that built all things is YHWH.  = indirect reference to the Messiah here.

So -- whose house are we if we hold fast...?

--We are referred as the house, He is referred to as the son or builder... b/c in Hebrew the  “builder” word is the same word as the word for son... benah   !!

Brad Scott says...
“There is also a play on words in Mattityahu 16:16  as Kefa confesses who Messiah is... “You are the Mashiach, the SON of the living God.”

And then Messiah says in verse 18 “and on this rock i will build my mikra / community...”

... The play on words  is with “builder” and “son”... that you can’t see in english...”
*
{WE at HLM have known this one... b/c we have understood that yeled is the Hebrew word for child of... but benah means  - plan for restoration!  :) }
 *

The house of YHWH -
Ephesians  2:20  cjb p 1460
“You have been built on the foundation of the emissaries and the prophets, with the (pena aben) cornerstone  being Y’shua the Messiah Himself.”

= He was and is corner stone in beginning
In B’resheet /Gen 6:14 = the building of the Ark.. ...

The image that is being drawn here is = a great disaster is coming and YHWH is going to protect his people... by placing them into this great HOUSE... an ark - not a boat...
They are going to be placed in there and protected.

See the pattern?...

    1. Creation
    2. fall
    3. restoration
    4. something NEW

Ivrim 1:10 cbj p 1494 - “In the beginning, YHWH , you laid the foundations of the earth; heaven is the work of your hands.”

YHWH has laid the foundation....  The foundation of ONE temple or ONE tabernacle = ONE house... and the corner stone  -the which is the Messiah.... the pena aben.

Brad Scott says....

“All things begin in B’resheet 1 - not at pentecost.”

Yochanan 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word/ Living Torah...

In the beginning ... He has a title establishing who YHWH is

The creation had a beginning (top of  page 4 in study guide)...

D’varim /Deut 32:4 cjb p 234
“The Rock!  His work is perfect, for all his ways are just.  A trustworthy God who does no wrong, he is righteous and straight.”

= This verifies that His work was/ is perfect...

... remember the number  7  is the number of completeness and B’re’shiyt stars with 7words,
which are saying His creation is complete  - whole - perfect.

7 words form a menorah...  7 branch with a servant branch...

one side of Menorah..
in the beginning God created
on the other side...  the object of his creation - the heavens and the earth

middle - aleph tov

end of first teaching...
