Torah Portion Terumah - Contributions - A Deeper Look at the Mishkan

13 February 2016  ~  4 Adar I  5776
Torah Parashah -  T ‘rumah ~ “Contributions”
Sh’mot (Exodus) 25:1- 27:19  RSTNE p 67

"YHWH speaks from the Covenant" - Harbour Light Ministries

Torah:

The last  two weeks were the ratification of the Book of the Covenant.

Moshe went up and down Mt Sinai meeting with YHWH and then the people Yisra’el.

The 10 Living Words were given to Moshe

Many mishpatim were given

Sh’mot 24 - is the covenant ceremony with the people (ami) Yisra’el saying in
Sh’mot 24:7  “All that YHWH has said we will do, and be obedient.”

Sh’mot 24:12  p 66
          Tablets of stone were given- and a “Torah” and “mitzvoth”....

Last week’s parashah ends with
Sh’mot 24:18 - “Moshe was in the mount 40 days and 40 nights”

We all know what happens after the 40 days and 40 nights....

-   the Golden Calf....
-   and Moshe smashes the tablets...

But today’s Parashah - T’rumah - “Contributions”
we are going to look at some of what YHWH gave Moshe while he was still up on the mountain....

We start the 7 chapters of instructions for building the Mishkan (Tabernacle)

Sh’mot 25:1 with and offering - given “willingly with his lev (heart)”

This offering was to go to making the Mishkan and the instruments of it ...

Great detailed instructions given for:

          the ark
          the shulchan (table) where the Lechem ha Panayim (bread of the                    face - presence)
          the menorah

          curtains and hooks and walls
          altar of acacia wood
          outer courtyard

What’s the big deal about this parashah - besides it is simply how to build the Mishkan....?

Let’s back up a bit...

remember these people - ami Yisra’el - are  - or were slaves...

Slaves might have food and water... but they don’t have wealth...

But remember, before they left - the Egyptians were giving them wealth!!

What would be the reason?? - as they weren’t going to go buy anything...

Water came from the rock, their clothes and shoes didn’t wear out...  manna was their food....

Now here in this parashah we see - why the wealth....

To build a place for YHWH to live among them.... !!

Sh’mot 25: 8
YHWH said...
          “And let them make Me a Kadosh Place: that I may dwell among them.”

And look at the requirement for giving ...

Sh’mot 25:2
          “”gives willingly with his heart”

So this is about giving.... from our hearts... of “stuff”... and of TIME!!...  (because it was going to take a lot of time to build all this!!)

It is a choice...  volunteering....

Today He makes His home in our bodies....  because we CHOOSE....  we have to give willingly of our hearts, and our time, and our stuff is also given willingly.

**

Let’s look at this parashah in a different way...
We know that in Sh’mot 24:12 - YHWH tells Moshe what is going to happen on the mountain...
          “And YHWH said to Moshe, Come up to Me into the mount, and be there: and I will give you tablets of stone, and a Torah and mitzvoth that I have written;  that you may teach them.”

And then there is the big time out... for all these 7 chapters of instructions....  and then is the Golden Calf story...

Why wouldn’t the instructions be put in the Torah - right before the Mishkan is built....  why here??

What if the instructions are what is really happening during the time Moshe is on the mountain??

What if he is actually getting a tour of the Mishkan in the heavenlies... actually seeing it??  !!

Think about this... Moshe doesn’t have to be on Mt Sinai - for YHWH to speak to him... Moshe has been getting instructions from YHWH right along....

So what if Mt Senai is about something else??

                    (some notes from Aleph Beta)

-   a POINT OF CONTACT -

**
Let’s look at this...instruction giving....

In parashah Vayak’hel - coming up
the instructions are written  - in order of the way things were built....

the outside first....

but here in T’rumah - the first instructions are about the furniture....

and later when YHWH explains where to put the altar

He says........in front of the curtain which is before the ark’s cover which is on top of the tablets of stone....

He doesn’t just say  - “put it in front of the curtain”

The text makes it clear that the altar does not have its own position - it’s just in relation to the tablets in the ark!!

Another thing....

the name of the Mishkan...
It is often referred to as “Tent of Meeting”

Sh’mot 25:22

Tells us where YHWH will speak from....
not just any place... but on top of the Ark’s cover between the two Cherubs....

and this is repeated later in Sh’mot 30:6
          “Where I will meet with you”

Then by calling it the “Tent of Meeting” - the Torah actually defines the Mishkan by the function of one thing -- the Tablets inside the Ark...!!

and throughout the Torah - the tablets are called - “The Tablets of Testimony”  = The tablets are testimony of the revelation at Sinai.

Later, in Parashah Pekudei the Mishkan is called the “Mishkan of Testimony”

again - it is about the function of the tablets.

WHY??

Everything about the Mishkan  is focused around the tablets!!

The tablets aren’t just a bunch of laws....

they are a constitution....  “The symbolic representation of the most fundamental values upon which a nation is founded.”

It is a constant reminder of who they are and what they believe.

The Mishkan is how we guard and protect the tablets...

The Mishkan was the center of the camp - and everyone camped around it.

YHWH meets with us and speaks with us from atop the tablets - the values...

So why did he get these instructions on Sinai...

BECAUSE YHWH is saying.... these are the basis for your nation.... and this is how to protect it....

And to look at it further - The Tablets - the Written Word - are the Mashiach!! -

          Just as Yahusha is the Living Word....  These tablets are the written Word....  !!

Now let’s look at the Mishkan another way....

 = as the type and shadow of Mashiach ...

The Mishkan (tabernacle) consisted of a tent-like structure (the tabernacle proper) covered by rug-like coverings for a roof, and an external courtyard (150 feet by 75 feet). The whole compound was surrounded by a high fence about 7 feet in height.

The fence was made of linen hangings held by pillars.
The tent (tabernacle proper) was divided into the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies.

The tent was made of acacia wood boards overlaid with gold and fitted together to form the walls, measuring 45 by 15 feet. On top, four layers of curtains acted as a roof to shield the tabernacle from sun and rain: The innermost layer was woven with fine linen and embroidered with figures of cherubim (angels), the second layer was made of goat’s hair, the third layer was made of rams’ skins dyed red, and the outermost layer was made of porpoise skins.

The curtains were pinned to the ground with loops and clasps.

The Gate:

Yochanan (John) 14:6 p 770
          “Yahusha said to him, I am the Derech, the Emet, and the Chayim:  no man comes to My abba except through Me.”

Yochanan 10:9 p 765
          “I am the door: by Me if any m an enters in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

The act of entering the gate to the tabernacle was significant to the Israelites. By entering, one could find forgiveness of sin and fellowship with God.

The Brazen altar and sacrifices:

Vayikra (Leviticus) 1:4 p 81
          And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering: and it shall be accepted for him to make keporah for him.”

Vayikra 17:11 p 94
          “For it is the chayim of all flesh;  the dahm of it is for Yisra’el, You shall eat the dahm of no manner of flesh for the chayim of all flesh is the dahm of it:  whoever eats it shall be cut off.”
Hebrews 9:22 p 819
          “And almost all things are by the Torah purged with dahm:  and without the shedding of dahm there is no forgiveness.”

The Laver

Ivrim (Hebrews) 10:22 p 820
          “Let us draw near with a true lev in full assurance of emunah, having our levavot sprinkled with an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure mayim.”

Washing = cleansing....

The Lamp stand - Menorah

Yochanan 8:12 p 763
          “Then spoke Yahusha again to them, saying, I am the light of the olam hazeh:  he that follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of chayim.”

Yochanan 12:46 p 769
          “I have come a Light into the olam hazeh that whoever believes on Me should not live in darkness.”

Table of Show Bread

Yochanan 6:36
          “And Yahusha went up into a mountain, and there He sat with His talmidim.”

Yochanan 6:50
          “This is the lechem that comes down from the shamayim that a man may eat of it, and not die.”

Mattityahu 26:26
          “And as they were eating, Yahusha took lechem, and made the bracha, and broke it, and gave it to the talmidim and said, Take, eat: this is My body.”

Gilyahna (Revelation) 3:20
          “See, I stand at the door, and knock:  if any man hears My voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.”

Altar of Incense

incense = symbol of prayer

Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 56:7 p 339

Gilyahna 8:3-4 p 915

Yochanan 17: 1-26 p 772

Romans 8:34 p 844
          “Who is the only One that could condemn His chosen people?  It is the Moshiach who died, yes.  But instead of condemning us, He has risen, to the right hand of YHWH, and He now makes intercession for us.”

Yochanan 14:13-14 p 770

Yakov (James 5:15-16 p 813

Ark of the Covenant

Containing the Mitzvoth - Torah... Living Torah = Mashiach

Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 37:16 p 321
          “”O YHWH, tzevaoth, Elohim of Yisra’el, You who live between the chervuim, You are the Elohim, even You alone, of all the malchutim of the earth:  You alone have made the shamayim and the earth.”

Schmuel bet (2 Samuel) 6:2 p 231
          “And Dawid arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Ba-Ale of Yahudah, to bring up from there the Ark of Elohim, whose name is called by the Name of YHWH tzevaoth that dwells between the cheruvim.”

From Refiner’s Fire:

k'ruvim (cherubim) must have held some huge significance for YHWH that we can't begin to comprehend. They were clearly not something the people worshiped; YHWH had commanded that man not make images of Him, yet He clearly commanded images of the k'ruvim throughout the tabernacle. Not only did two of these beings grace the ark (Exodus 25:18-21), but YHWH ordered them "worked into" the woven linen walls and curtains of the Tabernacle (Exodus 26:1, 31). The people must have known what they were and what they looked like, because Moshe doesn't explain them anywhere.
According to the Glossary in Stern's Complete Jewish Bible, p. 1578, k'ruvim are: Heavenly creatures (angels) who guarded the way to the Tree of Life in Gan 'Eden (Genesis 3:24), were described by Ezekiel as having four faces and four wings (Ezekiel 10:20-21), and were ridden by God (Psalm 18:11(10); compare the "living beings" of Rev 4:6. The term also refers to the gold-overlaid wooden images of same, constructed in obedience to God's command, which overshadowed the ark of the covenant in the tabernacle and in the temple. (Please take a few moments to read the above-mentioned references!)

B’re’shiyt 1:12
Vat-totze’  ha’arets deshe’  ‘esev  maz’riya’  zera’  l’miynehu  v’etz  ‘oseh-p’riy  ‘asher  zar’o-vo l’miynehu  vay-yar’  Elohiym  kiy-tov.

“And bore the earth vegetation herb seeding seed after its kind and the tree producing fruit which is it in it after its kind and saw Elohiym it was good.”

“And the wearth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and YHWH saw that it was good.”

This verse is a repeat of verse 11.  Which was the commandment going forth from YHWH’s mouth, for the earth to reproduce.

It may seem redunant... but it is important because - when the creation is told to produce - it does it.

This is showing the pattern for those who are truly the creation of YHWH.  The earth and the creation can’t say no, but they are nontheless expressing the fruit.

The trees clap thier hands and
Y’shua mentions that if He wanted to, He could raise up the rocks to praise Him.

But you and i have a choice... we have the abilit to say no to what YHWH wants.

NEW WORD:

VAT-TOTZE’ -
          yod - tzadi - ayin

          root = yatza’ = go forth, come out

          Y’sha’yahu 11:1 p 303 RSTNE
          “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Yishai, and a Netzer-Branch shall growo out of HIs roots:

          Y’sha’yahu 45:23 p 329
          “I have sworn by Myself, the Word is gone out of My mouth in tzedakah, and shall not return, That to Me every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall swear.”

          Miz’mor 37:6 p 508
          “And He shall bring forth your tzedakah as the light and your mishpat as the noonday.”

--Review other words because they are NOT first mention. (- follow along under the verse)

ha’arets = the earth

deshe’ = vegetation

‘esev = herb

mazeriya’ = seeding

zera = seed

le’miynehu = after its kind

ve’etz = and the tree

‘oseh = producing

‘e’riy = fruit

‘asher = which

ZAR’O-VO = IS IT IN IT = a direct reference to a seed being in something

le’miynehu = after its kind

vay-yare’ = and saw

Elohiym = God

kiy-tov = it was good

B’re’shiyt 1:13

“Vayehiy - ‘erev  vayehiy - voger yom sheliyshiy.”

“And the evening and the moring were day third.”

Vayeyiy - ‘erev = and the evening

Vayehiy - voquer = and the morning

yom = day

Sheliyshiy = third
          shin lamed shin
          root = shelosh = third

It’s no coincidence that this is the third day....
and the third day is all about the earth producing fruit.

True - literal first fruits of the creation...

This same term is  used of Y’shua’s resurrection.

We know that Y’shua rose on the Feast of First Fruits
and we know that was on the third day.

No coincidence that on the third day the earth was commanded to bring forth fruit.

Third = ordinal number  - rather than the cardinal number 3

page 43 in study guide - list of Scripture with Third in...

“Three” or “third” = fullnesss, perfection, complettion in time and space. (- not from a heavenly or Yah’s point of you
as we see that is found in the  number 7.)

**
Next time we will be on Sh’mot 1:14... and talk about the things in the sky....
which is an interesting thing considering there is a blood moon comping up on Pesach - April 4!!

**********************~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~**************************

Torah Parashah: Vayak’hel (he assembled) and Pekudei (accounts)  -

Sh’mot (Exodus) 35:1-40:38 p 76

I used to read Sh’mot and become irritated with the details.

I am beginning to see it differently now.

Sh’mot 35:1 - Moshe gathers Isra’el...
“And Moshe gathered allthe congregation of the children of Yisrale together, and said to them,  These are the worlds that YHWH has commanded, that you should do them.”

and then immediatly starts talking about working six days but resting on Shabbbt.

Then he invited Yisra’el to bring an offering...

What were the qualifications of those who brought offerings?

Sh’mot 35:21
“... everyone whose lev (heart) stirred up and everyone whose ruach was willing...”

Sh’mot 35:25-26 p 76
          chochmah / wisdom in heart
          and a heart “stirred” to do it
Sh’mot 36: 2
          chochmah/ wisdom in heart
          and a heart “stirred” to do it

How does this fit with us?

We could say - how are we qualified to bring offerings to YHWH?

First let me say that offerings are not just gifts of money... but our offerings we give unto YHWH are our time and talents and efforts and focus and perservance and the way we love others.

Are our hearts “stirred” to do it?
Do we have a passion that - this is our focus and we are intensly following hard after him?

Do we walk in chochmah / wisdom??

Is the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) in us bring chochmah and stirring up our hearts??

~
Sh’mot 36:6 - Moshe had to STOP them from continuing to give!!
Image if that was the probelm today!
Think how excited and how focused they must have been!!

*
Sh’mot 36:8 begins the particulars of the things in the mishkan /tabernacle.

and this goes through...Sh’mot 39:42-43...

We don’t know how long this took...
One estimation says 6-8 months, and another thought 5 months.

One interesting idea I found ....

~~
According to the Mishnah...
“Hundreds of years before it was built, the Mishkan was already in the works.
In fact, on his way down to Egypt, Jacob planted acacia trees, instructing his sons that thier descendants should take the wood with them when they leave.  That way they would have the right materials on had when the command would come to build a Tabernacle.”

Now i can’t tell you if it is true or not - but it is interesting!
~
The tabernacle contained slightly  more than:

1 ton of gold
3.75 tons of sliver, and
2.5 tons of bronze.
More silver was used indicating the value of redemption (symbolism of silver.”

The tabernacle probably weighted in excess of - 10 tons.

However, there were between 32,000 and 75,000 adults male Levites.  Thus each man would have had to carry less than a pound.  One ton of gold is worth $10 million

~~
And to go along with our B’re’shiyt teaching.... on Sheliyshiy = third...

There were 3 metals used in the Tabernacle
          gold, silver, and brass

          gold = YHWH
          silver = redemption
          brass = sin

There were 3 coverings on the tabernacle
          Rams’ skins dyed red
          badgers’ skins
          woven goats hair

There were three divisions
          Outer Court
          Holy Place
          Most Holy Place

There were 3 entry ways into the tabernacle:
          the gate
          the door
          the vail

There were 3 colors used in the tabernacle:
          blue
          purple
          scarlet

There were 3 uses of oil in worship in the tabernacle:
          Oil for light
          spices for anointing oil
          sweet incense

~~~~
Sh’mot 39:42-43 p 80
Each piece was built /made - as we see in
Sh’mot 39:1-31 and throughout this section of Scripture...
... “as YHWH commanded Moshe.”
**
(In this spot or nearby i talked about something close to this:....
Throughout Sh’mot 39 - the Word makes it clear... that they built all these things....
          “as YHWH commanded Moshe.”
And can’t you see by the end of chapter 39.. Moshe is inspecting... and there the main builders would have stood and said to themselves...
Do you think he likes it?  Is it going to pass??  he sort of rolled his eyes or he sighed loudly... are we in trouble...
b/c they would have known... the screwed up at the Golden calf and they could have died....  and now here was another chance - they couldn’t mess this up.
Now keep in mind... they would have had reminders....  they probably were all bald!
What?
Yeps bald - b/c that is one of the side effects  for consuming gold... remember they had to grind up the calf and dump it in water and drink it.
so they’ve been building these tabernacle parts for roughly the guess is about 6 months....  bald, watching each other’s hair grow in...  a constant reminder of the big mess they made.
Sh’mot 39:43 p 80
    ~ Imagine this...  finally after all this hard work....
there they stood waiting....
and Moshe approved it.  whew!!!
And then in Sh’mot 40 YHWH  starts giving Moshe the instructions to set it up!
So Moshe did...  Sh’mot 40:16  “So Moshe did: according to allthat YHWH had commmanded him, so did he.”
What a joy that must have been!!
Do you think they realized that YHWH could have and maybe “should” have killed them for their disobedience...??
Do you think they delighted in their salvation?
It was salvation -  and what saved them was this temporary priesthood /tabernacle system...
They were given a second chance to be YHWH’s people....
and they gave and gave until Moshe had to tell them to stop.
Then they worked and worked... following directions explicitly ...
Maybe they - this particular generation had at least temporairly learned that YHWH expects things done HIS way. ...?...
So they must have been delighted to set up the tabernacle...
I think they must have been meticulous about the building and very very careful about the setting it up....  this was the tabernacle for YHWH to dwell among them...
Do we take care of our temples (our bodies) like this today?
And what was there?....
Sh’mot 40:34-38 p 80
The cloud - the Presence of YHWH was so heavy that Moshe couldn’t even enter the Tabernacle!
What is that CLOUD ?...
1.     first appeared at Red Sea crossing  Sh’mot 13:20 - 14:25
2.     Appeared before the people at Mount Sinai.  Sh’mot 19:9-20
3.     Descended upon tabernacle and continued to guide Isra’elites
          -Sh’mot 40:34-38; 9:15-23. 10:33=36
4.       Filled Temple of solomon -I Kings 8:10-13 and II Chronicles 5:14
5.    Spoken of in Psalms 99:7 and 105: 38-39
6.   Departed by the time of Babylonian captivity (586 BCE)
7.   No indication of appearance during second temple period.
8.   Appeared at Y’shua’s transfiguration in Matt 17:5, Luke 9:34-36
9.       Will appear at Y’shua’s return  Luke 21:25-28
10.      Will reappear in the “last days”  (Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 4:2-6)
11.     In permanent resides during millennium ( Rev 21:23)
~~
Let’s look in the B’rit Chadashah...
2 Corinthians 5:1-5 p 867
This is talking about the temple in the RE-newed covenant of the Melchizedek Priesthood...
Ivrim /Hebrews 9:1-10 p 819
There is a distinction made between a heavenly tent and an earthly tent, and between what was ‘built by man’ and what is ‘not part of this creation’
Ivrim 9:1-10 describes the earthly tabernacle, or “tent of meeting” as a place into which the priests would go to offer sacrifices for the sins of the people.
Then look at
Ivrim 9:11
Who is the better Cohen HaGadol (High Priest)??
And it is His blood that is offered... HE is made like the halves of the animals he as the “burning lamp” walked between in B’re’shiyt 15 - when the Covenant of Promise was made and Y’shua walked between the halves with the “smoking furnace” / YHWH ... instead of Avraham.
Y’shua covenanted right there in B’re’shiyt 15 that man would not have to die, but HE would be the one who died if man broke the covenant!
So it is HIS blood that saves us... His blood that re-established the Covenant of Promise!
~
Now you really need to understand this... b/c christianity will tell you that it is about “the blood shed on the “cross”... and that the blood of animals could temporarily cleanse worshipers of the guilt of sin.”
But it is not about the levitical priesthood not working....
It is about the Covenant of Promise in B’re’shiyt 15  p 18
and WHO covenanted WHAT.
B’re’shiyt 15: 17 p 18
Y’shua HAD to die...b/c HE walked between the animal halves instead of Avraham!  He promised then - way back in - B’re’shiyt 15, that if man broke the Covenant - that HE - Y’shua would be the one to die!!
THAT IS THE FOCUS!!
It is all about Mashiach ... all about Y’shua.
He promised in B’re’shiyt 15.... and He fulfilled it...
Yisra’el should have been killed when they broke the Covenant or promise... but that was not the agreement made...
The one who is represented of by so many things in THREE...
....it was HIM who agreed.
...It was HIM who promised to be our “instead-of” - “replacement”....
...  IT was HIS blood that cleanses us and makes us whole.
It’s all about Y’shua’s blood - nobody else’s would have counted.
~~
I’d like to read something from Mike Clayton...
          “So what have we learned from these 16 chapters of the Tabernacle?
We’ve learned that we must have a model to go by....
We’ve learned that we can not come up with our own model...
-different days and different diets and expect Him to show up.
We must have a pattern, and that pattern in Scripture is clear.
It takes time, effort and giving of ourselves to be a Tabernacle worthy of His presence.
We must have authority:  Not only must we submit to His authority, but also to those on earth He has chosen to lead us.
We must leave our opinions at the door:  His way of doing things is not open for our interpretation.
We must expect the unexpected:  The day we have it all figured out of how everything is going to happen will be the day  nothing happens.  Well, it will still happen, but we will miss it because we may be looking the wrong direction
We need to keep our poles in the Ark and our tent pegs shallow:
Remember those poles which were to be left in the Ark?  Remember that the tent pgs were only to be half in the ground and half out of the ground?
The purpose was to be a reminder that this Tabernacle is not to stay in one place and become a museum.
It was to be a guide to take the people home.
And guess what, HE still is!!
So how are you keeping your temple??
Because it is ALL about Y’shua HaMashaich - the one who agreed in a covenant - so we wouldn’t have to die....  he would take our place.
Praise YHWH
and AMEIN.
